The Yersinia pseudotuberculosis surface protein invasin mediates internalization through binding to multiple β1-integrin receptors. Invasin-mediated uptake stimulates various intracellular signaling pathways, including the Rho GTPase signaling pathway. Rho GTPases RhoG and Rac1 are activated by invasin-mediated binding and are required for successful internalization. This image is a composite of 10 different nascent phagosomes during the various stages of internalization. Pink-red regions represent extracellular portions of bacteria while blue regions represent internalized portions. COS1 cells were incubated with plasmid-cured Y. pseudotuberculosis for 20 min, fixed, and processed for immunofluorescence microscopy. (See related article on p. 4771.)
